Five acquaintances decide to spend the weekend telling ghost stories at a country house; together they provide a journalist’s view, spiritual sensibili-ties, holistic understanding, and the desire for adventure.  The house offers more than they bargained for: evil resides there; so does a possible guardian—angel or ghost?

“My name is Anna.  I waken sometimes to the sound of birds, wind, a voice, or for no reason I can determine.  Perhaps from longing, which is also why I sleep. I’m slow to wake, unsure which time I’m in. I do try to care for this house as always—want to care for it, because it’s my home, and dear to me—but I must learn again. I work at learning. I can see my son, speak with him, kiss his cheek, take his hand, and feel again that love I have for him. When he’s not my son, but the other, as now, I’m wary.”

Not "just" a ghost story. Kinder's protagonist is sweet, a little bemused by the modern world, and still struggling with a hard choice she made when she was alive. The rest of the ladies are struggling with their own lives and choices, and initially just looking for a companionable weekend exploring a reputed haunted house. Unfortunately, this house has more than a resident ghost. It also still harbors the active evil she tried to stop when alive. Now she is all that stands between the women and far more than just a hair-raising weekend adventure. Each of the women, alive and dead, has to confront their own past and future and the choices they've made and their view of good and evil before they leave this place. Entertaining and at the same time stirring my own thoughts about what constitutes good, evil, and what lies beyond.

This book won't make you jump out of your skin, but it will leave you more than a little uneasy, and maybe make you wonder if you yourself have actually "encountered a ghost."

Multiple ladies who have had their own experiences with the unexplained banding together for a good time ghost hunting. Hoping to have a little fun, maybe get a little scared. They get that plus a lot more! A riveting read. Not a once through and done. I found myself rereading the individuals bios and tales/experiences attempting to second guess the author on what might happen next-didn’t work!
